College Prep Courses

College Preparation (12th grade, fall semester)

College Preparation is a one semester course designed to assist students with the college application process. Seniors who are planning to attend universities in the US are strongly encouraged to take this class during the fall semester of their senior year. The course will offer a brief introduction to career inventories which can help students investigate areas of potential career choices and the path needed to reach a career goal.Students will be assisted in searching for colleges using internet search engines, books listing colleges by several different criteria and meetings with college representatives. They will work on filling out college applications, learn how to request transcripts and teacher recommendations and we will discuss financial aid and scholarship opportunities. This course will also include instructions on registering for the SAT, ACT and TOEFL Exams and ways to prepare for these tests. There will be an opportunity for students to meet with representatives from colleges across the US, during the College Preparation class time and other times during the school day. By the end of this course students will be able to choose several colleges to apply to, register for college entrance exams, understand admissions requirements and application deadlines, and complete their college applications. There are no prerequisites for this course.

SAT Preparation (one semester)

This course is designed to familiarize students with the new SAT: a standardized test required for admission to most universities in the United States. Students will learn how to register the test, time requirement as well as learn and practice various question types and test taking strategies. Special attention will be given to the English portion in three sections----critical reading (evidence-based reading), writing and language (identifying sentence errors, improving sentences, improving paragraphs), and essay writing (analyzing an argument. There are no prerequisites for this course.

TOEFL Preparation (one semester)

This course prepares students for success in taking the TOEFL exam. We use real TOEFL questions to practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing for the actual exam. Throughout the whole semester, students are registering for and taking the exam on the weekend, after the taking the exam, as they return to class, they share their strengths and weaknesses which will be addressed in the class. As we practices we use strategies that help students do their best in the test, critical thinking, arguing a position, and detailing a position are all important skills that new to many international students, but are required in TOEFL test. We work o these and many other pertinent skills. This course is designed for students who are taking the TOEFL test or would like to improve their scores. There are no prerequisites for this course.
